Purpose

The Washington County Genealogical Society was established in 1983. The purpose of the Washington County Genealogical Society is to create and foster an interest in genealogy; to gather and preserve genealogical and historical data; to aid individuals in genealogical research; and to establish and maintain a genealogical library through contributions, donations, and exchanges. A newsletter is published quarterly by the WCGS.

Library Location

We are located in the Washington Public Library, second floor next to the Helen Wilson Room. The library is handicap accessible. Two microfilm readers and one microfilm reader/printer are available, as are regular copy machine services.

Standard Copies are .10 each
Microfilm Copies are .25 each

Genealogy Collection

Genealogist will find county histories, census records, plat books, atlases, death records, obituaries, church records, school records, reunions, family and bible records, pension records, grave records, cemetery records, city directories, township histories, and miscellaneous information.

Newspaper Collection

Newspaper Collection for Washington County are on microfilm. We have most all the newspapers that were printed in Washington County since publishing began. A reader/printer is also available at .25 per copy page.

Microfilm Material

1840, 1850,1860,1870,1880,1900, 1910, 1925 Washington County, Iowa census microfilm is available and some census of other Iowa counties. Other microfilm materials include: probate records, will, probate journals, church records, and the roster and records of Iowa Soldiers in the War of the Rebellion.

Family Histories

Over 450 family histories have been donated to the Washington County Genealogical Society. Many have Iowa connections. The society has a yearly book contest open to all aspects of genealogy. For more information contact:
